National Survey of Interactive Whiteboard Usage Interactive Whiteboard (IWB) usage has been widely reported throughout the K-12 school market, with brand names including SMART Board, ACTIVBoard, PolyVision, and Mimio starting to gain a strong foothold in this segment. Education Market Research (EMR) has just released a new report, the “National Survey of Interactive Whiteboard Usage”, now available to NSSEA members at a 12% savings. EMR's survey data yields a 2010-11 market size of $1.035 billion for IWB hardware and accessories and $592.5 million for IWB content and tools. Here are a few of the survey highlights:

  • An impressive 63.5% indicated they have their own IWB, which they do not share with any colleagues.
  • A strong majority (65.1%) of the sample said they use an IWB with their students every day, which would work out to about 20 times a month.
  • According to the largest group of survey respondents (42.7%), they have their IWBs in use more than 5 hours a week. The average usage duration is 4.6 hours a week.
  • In grades K-2, Mathematics (93.8%) and English/Language Arts (92.3%) get the most mentions for frequent IWB use.
  • In grades 9-12, Mathematics (55.7%) is still number one, but Science (32.9%) and Social Studies (30.5%) come before English/Language Arts (26.3%).
